Social Media User Categories
While social media remains an evolving story, the players are taking shape when you observe what they do on the web. As my psychotherapist friend (yes, we are just friends) says, "behavior predicts behavior."
In fact, there are six categories of social media users and these types are usually grouped according to their activities. Check this out:
Creators: The first group are the creators. While there are many people who use social media, only a few create content. Creators are online users who write blog posts, upload videos and publish web pages to social media websites. Creators essentially create social media for the world to see.
Critics: The next group are the critics. The old saying that “everyone’s a critic” may be a stretch but it remains mostly true in the world of the Internet. Critics respond to content posted by other users. They post reviews and ratings of products and services and leave comments on forums and blogs.
Collectors: One way some devoted followers of a subject can keep up to date is to use RSS feeds and social bookmarking tools. This ensures they get the latest information. These followers are known as collectors. Around 10 to 20 percent of all users online are collectors.
Joiners: Joiners are those who join social networking websites like Facebook and X and maintain multiple profiles.
Spectators: This is the category most people probably fall into. Spectators are those who read blogs and online forums, view user-generated videos such as YouTube, listen to podcasts and frequently search for user ratings and reviews.
Inactives: The last group are the Inactives. As the name suggests, Inactives are those who are online but in no way participate in any form of social media. However, this group is becoming rarer as most websites are now integrating elements of social media into their website.
