Cord Cutting: Why Millions Are Ditching Cable

Remember when cable TV was the only game in town? Long contracts, endless channels you never watched, and a bill that seemed to creep higher every year. No wonder millions of people are pulling the plug. Literally.

Cord cutting is the shift away from traditional cable and satellite TV toward internet-based streaming services. Instead of paying for 200 channels when you only watch five, viewers are choosing platforms like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, or YouTube TV that let them watch what they want, when they want.

The appeal is clear:

  • Lower costs – Monthly streaming subscriptions often cost a fraction of the average cable bill.
  • Flexibility – Cancel anytime, no contracts required.
  • Personalization – From binge-worthy dramas to niche documentaries, content is tailored to taste.
  • No hardware headaches – A smart TV, tablet, or even your phone becomes your entertainment hub.

Of course, cord cutting isn’t perfect. With so many streaming platforms, costs can add up if you subscribe to too many. Live sports and local news are still a sticking point, though more services are starting to solve that.

Still, the trend is undeniable: people want control over how they watch TV, and streaming delivers it. Cable’s dominance is fading, and the future of entertainment is on-demand, portable, and personal.
